Fashion with cupcakes

Fashion ideas are everywhere. I was flipping through my magazine with cupcakes on the cover and of course, new diets inside, when an article on style caught my eye. Three women in their late 20's to early 30's, were modeling this season's "four essential accessories". Perhaps I'm past the target age for this magazine since none of the models resembled me, but I still make a real effort to stay stylish. (So does my 86 year-old mother whose favorite jacket is a black leather blazer). It seemed several of the "must haves" were impossible for me to adopt. The heels? too high for bad knees; Belts? a no-no for an ample middle; Yes! the jewelry would work! The trend for fall is oversized, bold, heavy pieces. Be it large beads, a massive pendant or heavy metal, this is a style any age can wear. Accessorizing with jewelry is the exception to ageism. That is what is so wonderful about jewelry, it transends age and wearing current trends can make you look younger. My friend Bev is petite and lively, in her 70's, and looks best in vibrant colors and large pieces of jewelry. She's a real hip lady and trendy jewelry helps her stay that way!

Don't tangle your dangle

Once the leaves turn we all become enamoured with scarves. Who can resist such rich textures, vibrant colors, and designer patterns? There's something about fall that has the clothes horse in us panting to purchase. We want sweaters, jackets, coats and the potential to layer anything and everything (after all that's an invitation to a larger wardrobe and more shopping.) Scarves are emerging again this year as a "must own one" accessory. They are fabulous in their versatility but come with one important caveat..."Don't tangle your dangle!"

Be careful not to wear a necklace that competes with your scarf, consider a brooch instead. Since earrings are undoubtedly a woman's most important and potentially flattering piece of jewelry, be careful with your choices when wearing a scarf. Avoid drop earrings that interfere, even if you are wearing a scarf over a coat or jacket and plan to remove it. Make sure your earrings end before your scarf begins. Consider large studs or wide, short hoops instead of dangles. Finally, learn to tie your scarf in several ways so you don't ever tangle your dangle!

Sex and Carrie Bradshaw's pearls

Those of you who have seen the "Sex and the City" movie already know Carrie Bradshaw has traded in her gold chain nameplate necklace. She's more gown-up now and owns a 32 inch strand of Mikimoto pearls. It's oh-so fashionable, classic, and enviable at a price of $11,900. Ouch! She announces her engagement wearing these opera pearls, combines it with other necklaces, and showing how pearls can really be worn day and night--wears it to bed with Mr. Big--WOW! It's caused a run on opera length pearls. But why did anyone have to wait for a fashion statement from Sarah Jessica Parker to possess these beauties? Mine aren't Mikimoto, but they are genuine freshwater pearls and at 8 mm match Carrie's size perfectly. I wish my dress size matched as well, but it doesn't. So I plan to rent the DVD, watch it wearing my opera pearls, and eat popcorn and M&Ms. I realize some things--like a size zero--are out of my reach, but not real pearls!

One of the highlighted articles on MSN today caught my eye: "5 Jewelry Essentials." The link showed a woman wearing - what else - pearls!

See It On The Evening News

While my husband is gnashing his teeth over our falling stock, I'm distracting myself by checking out the anchor's necklace...Katie Couric's of course, not Tom Brokaw's. Anchorwomen and news talk show hosts are very astute at selecting a necklace or earrings to enhance their looks. Have you ever noticed how some of their guests never quite achieve the same polished look as their host? TV regulars are usually great at jewelry accessorizing since you only see them from the waist up. In the 80's the popular heavy chained choker was actually called the "anchor" necklace. So when you get up to get your husband some aspirin, double-check the women on the news. Take a second look at Hilary's or Rep. Nancy Pelosi's necklace, Gov. Palin's brooch, and Condaleeza's pearls while you pity those poor guys who only get to wear ties. At least we can wear some jewelry to cheer us up!

Did It Just Wink At Me?

My sister has a favorite explanation for succumbing to a purchase. She simply states, "It winked at me." When something "winks" at Kathy, we all know how irresistible it had to be. Really, this is a good rule to follow for an unnecessary article, regardless if the expense is big or small. Is it something so desirable, unusual, or perfectly suitable, that it actually does more than just call you over to take a look? If you walk away without it, will you later regret it? Is something telling you to take it home and you will love it for a very long time? Sometimes it's a good thing to give into such a passionate purchase. How will you know you should really buy it? Next time just ask yourself, "Did it just wink at me?"

A Cherry on the Sundae

Have you ever been served a chocolate sundae without a cherry? Never! You don't need one to make it taste better, it already tastes great. You can always skip the whipped cream and nuts, but the cherry--well, without one it isn't a real sundae! Sometimes, when I look in the mirror I know something is missing--it's the cherry--the one accessory that finishes the outfit.

Next time you feel something is missing with your appearance, think of a cherry. It's simple, sweet, and colorful. Now, what piece of jewelry will fill that roll? Is it a pair of earrings that brings out your shirt's color, or maybe some beads, pearls or an enhancer that highlights your dress neckline? The cherry is that one accessory that goes on top and makes it all so delicious!
